Artist Statement
The first time I ever saw an electrical power plant, like the ones surrounded by a chain link fence, I thought it was an amusement park. All these grey interlocking coils and wires sang together in a way that I assumed had to be for something fun – like something I would have done on Rollercoaster Tycoon if my home computer only ran in black and white. Later as a brooding teenager, I don’t think I thought of them at all – I didn’t know their function, but I knew it wasn’t something fun. Then as the adult – I appreciate the beauty of their structural planning. Every part serves a purpose and somehow comes out looking like a scaled down dystopian landscape every time I see one – but I still don’t really know or care to know what exactly goes on in there. Collectively, we actualize what we are seeing and often must let down the curious child’s hopes. My intuitive direction of working collapses life’s timeline where the viewer isn't separated by various stages in life. Instead, the experience is metamorphosed into one perpetual conglomeration. Video, texture, and interactive elements invite my viewers to meander within that first childlike glimpse before brushing off the desire to be curious. Led by curiosity and a refusal of the answers to my own questions, instinctive form and cathartic gesture allows me to create work that exists comfortably within the first glimpse.
